With synchronization you want to accomplish offline availability of all eGroupWare data like contacts or appointments. Therefore you may use a mobile phone, handheld or offline client. Another requirement is to keep using programs that you're used to, like Outlook or Thunderbird.
The biggest obstacle for synchronization is a language which both sides understand in the same way and the capability to process the information. There are various projects for synchronization with eGroupWare using different approaches like SyncML, iCal, GroupDAV...
Generally the synchronization from eGroupWare to an offline client cause seldom problems. Restricting in the use of the data is the limited capacity of the client to handle e.g. different users, group appointments, serial appointments or group address books. This also causes often problems, like duplicates, with re-synchronization to eGroupWare.
So, we recommend to synchronize only in one direction. With synchronization in both ways it is important to know exactly what causes problems with the client you use. In any case, before the first re-synchronization, you should backup your system to be able to restore your data.
